Jose Esquivel was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He still lives there with his wife and family. Esquivel attended The Warren Hunter School of Art where he mastered the techniques of Commercial Art. After graduation, he worked for City Public Gas and Electric Company for 30 years. He retired as the Supervisor of the Art Department. Esquivel’s art career is focused on graphic and fine arts. Many of his pieces have a social or political theme. He was a founding member of a Chicano collective in 1968 called “El Grupo.” He has been exhibiting his work since 1960. In 2014 his work was part of the Arte Latino Now Group Exhibition at Queens University of Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina. His most recent exhibit was at the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, Illinois as part of the La Muerte Niña “The Day of the Dead” exhibition. He is currently working on a project involving Texas imagery and Tex-Mex.
