Rogelio Gutierrez was born in San Jose, California to parents who were immigrants from Jalisco, Mexico. He has three brothers. His father and mother both worked in the service industry. His father was a short order cook and his mother worked for hotels. His family moved to a migrant town near the Central Valley in California called Farmersville. Rogelio enjoyed school, his teachers, and making art since a young age. The town where he lived was very small. He relocated to find more opportunities to grow as an artist. Luckily, Los Angeles was not too far for him. L.A. provided a variety of influences for Rogelio and his artwork. He was able to connect with other artists who were also immigrants and shared similar stories to his and his family. While his parents are not very familiar with the career choice Rogelio has made, they are very supportive. Rogelio studied at Long Beach State where he received his BFA in printmaking and his MFA in visual arts and Public Life from Herron School of Art and Design in Indiana. He now is an Assistant Professor of Art at Arizona State University. He teaches printmaking with a focus on contemporary Latino art. Rogelio resides in the metro area of Phoenix, AZ. He is a working artist currently tackling a project he has named “Ni De Aquí Ni De Allá.” He enjoys traveling and visiting his family and watches as many Lakers games as possible.
