Pedro Medina
Pedro Medina was born in Lima, Peru on August 1, 1977. Since then, he has made an impression in the world of Latino literature, both in and out of the United States. Medina studied law in Peru because he enjoyed reading and thought that would be a good fit for him; however, once in the program he decided law was not the best fit for him. He decided he would like to be writer and pursue that in Spain. But first, he wanted to visit the United States, which is how he ended up in Miami, Florida. Medina’s life in Peru was busy, but he and his family lived a life free of many problems. His mother did not work outside of the home. She stayed home during the day and raised Medina and his sister. His father owned two factories. One factory produced dairy products such as milk, cream cheese, and cream for coffee, juice, or milk (crema de leche). The other factory produced cardboard boxes. Medina spent the weekends at his grandmother’s house and enjoyed spending much of his time with his cousins. He said his life in Peru was “nothing from another world” (Medina, 2014). Now, both Medina’s parents and his sister also live in Miami near him and his daughter. Upon arrival in the United States in September of 2002, Medina delved into the culture of Miami, Florida. He enrolled at Florida International University (FIU) and received a Bachelor’s degree with a major in literature and a minor in sociology. Currently, Medina is studying business at Miami Dade College. He will graduate with a major in Management. He believes he needs to know about managing a business and working with colleagues, clients, and readers as he grows his publishing business, Suburbano Ediciones (Suburban Editions). Suburban Editions is a digital publishing company that seeks to contribute to the literature of Hispanic writers in America and circulate their works worldwide. The company introduces the USA to works of Spanish and Latin American authors who would otherwise have had difficulty sending their work across borders. The website for Suburbano Ediciones is http://suburbanoediciones.com/. Medina has published three pieces and is currently finishing a novel. The published works are: Las calles de Miami (Streets of Miami), Mañana no te veré en Miami (I Won’t See You Tomorrow in Miami); Viaje One Way: una antología de escritores de Miami (One Way Trip: An Anthology of Writers from Miami) (which has just been named best book of the year by the Miami Arts Foundation), and Lado B (Side B). Medina prefers to write while he is home alone at night. Medina writes because he enjoys telling stories. He believes that a person cannot decide whether or not to be a writer; writing is just something that is inside of him. Much of Medina’s inspiration comes from the streets of Miami. When asked about his inspiration and whether or not his stories are based upon his experiences, Medina responded, “An author is a piece of literature, their characters, and their stories. Let's say the starting point for fiction is reality, and then it is deformed, and becomes transformed into stories” (Medina, 2014). Medina gave an example of a story about a rose vendor. This character is based upon the rose vendor that often goes to the café that he usually visits. Medina does not know him or his story, but he wonders where he is from, where his family is from, and if he likes what he does. Medina’s works of literature come not from who he is, but how he observes the world around him, specifically his life in Miami.
